The workbench behind the website

A smart lock is a good idea on the right door and a headache on the wrong one. Before recommending anything we look at how the door hangs, whether the deadbolt already throws freely, how thick the slab is and where the signal has to reach. If those check out, we install it and set up codes for each person; if not, we fix the door first.

Shop rules

One key, every door, no fuss.

  1. A straight assessment. If the lock is fine and the door just needs adjusting, we say so. If it has reached the end of its life, we say that too, and show you why.
  2. Options laid out side by side. Repair, rekey, replace or upgrade, with what each involves and what it changes. You pick; we do not steer you toward the biggest job.
  3. Finished, not nearly finished. Every key tested in every lock, every screw tight, every strike aligned, and the packaging in our van rather than your bin.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Send a photo of the lock.

Doors on the same property rarely deserve the same investment. We look at which openings are hidden from the street, which lead to what matters and which are already sound, then put the strongest hardware where an intruder would actually try.

The old deadbolt has grown lazy. You turn the thumb-turn and the bolt creeps out halfway, then needs a second push with the door pulled tight.

Which fix fits?

Tap a situation. The answer opens here.

If Someone forced the door and the frame is split.

Then Frame repair, a new strike and a fresh cylinder.

The wood is rebuilt before new hardware goes in, so the door locks tonight.

If They came in through a window, but your spare keys were on the hook.

Then Rekey every lock those keys operate.

Anything those keys open needs new pins: house, garage and shed, and a taken car key should be deprogrammed. Lock Rekeying

If There are fresh tool marks around the lock but nobody got in.

Then A security check of that door and the others.

We look at what held and suggest reinforcements that make a second attempt pointless.

  • 19 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 19% of homes in Milton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Newer homes are built to standard bores and backsets, so nearly any modern deadbolt, lever set or smart lock fits straight on. The locksmith can offer a wide range of hardware knowing it will mount cleanly without new holes.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Milton (2021 Census).Where housing types are mixed, the same lost-key call means different things. Questions we hear most

Will a new lock fit the holes already in my door?

Usually, yes. Most residential doors are prepared to standard sizes, a 54 millimetre cross bore and a backset of 60 or 70 millimetres, and most modern hardware adjusts between those backsets. The locksmith measures before choosing, so the new lock is matched to the door rather than the other way around. Where an older mortise lock or an unusual bore is found, filler plates, extension kits or a carefully jigged new bore bring the door to standard.

What happens to the old lock?

It is yours. Some people keep a sound old cylinder as a spare or move a decent deadbolt to a shed or garage door, and the locksmith can rekey it to the house key for that purpose. Worn or damaged hardware is taken away for recycling if you prefer. Either way, the old keys should be gathered up and discarded so nobody confuses them with the new set.

Is a smart lock a good upgrade, and what happens when the batteries run out?

For a household with many people coming and going, codes that can be added and removed are a real convenience. Behind the keypad it is still a deadbolt, so grade and strike matter as much as ever. Batteries typically last months and the lock warns you as they fade; depending on the model, a dead battery is handled with a mechanical override key or with external contacts for a temporary power source, so it is worth confirming which one your lock uses.

What are the hardware grades I see on the packaging?

Locks and deadbolts are tested against industry standards for security, durability and finish. Commercial hardware is graded 1, 2 or 3 with grade 1 the highest. Residential hardware carries a letter label for each of the three categories, from C for good through B to A for the top level. Security tests include hammer blows and pulling on the lock; durability covers cycle life and seasonal misalignment; finish covers salt, humidity and scratching. Your locksmith translates the label for your door.
